Call for Internship Applicants

The Carnivore Conservancy (TCC) invites applications for short- and medium-term internships. The goal of our internship program is to provide hands-on experience for undergraduates, recent university graduates or others seeking to begin a career in field-based conservation research. Many past interns have gone on to postgraduate study or paid employment in fields related to wildlife conservation.

We offer two levels of internships. Basic internships are open to anyone age 18 or older. Advanced internships are limited to those preparing to begin a Ph.D. with TCC.

Basic internship

  • Minimum duration: 9 days (1 field expedition)
  • Maximum duration: 6 months (16 field expeditions)
  • Requirements:
    • Reasonable physical fitness, including the ability to lift 25 kg to chest height
    • For internships longer than 1 field expedition: Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle (4x4 experience preferred) and a clean driving record (no moving violations or accidents)
  • Duties: Assist TCC researchers by performing basic fieldwork procedures; most frequent tasks are cleaning traps and recording data as researchers process captured animals
  • Animal handling allowed: No
  • Costs: Basic interns must provide their own transportation to and from north-western Tasmania and contribute A$20 per day toward the cost of room and board. This amount covers dormitory style accommodation (in some cases you may have a room to yourself), vegetarian meals and snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. (Meat and alcoholic beverages, should you wish them, are at your own expense.) Our fieldwork accommodation is a large and comfortable home, less than an hour's drive from each of our study sites, with all the modern conveniences (including unlimited high-speed internet).

Advanced internship

  • Minimum duration: 3 months (8 field expeditions)
  • Maximum duration:1 year (up to 32 field expeditions)
  • Eligibility: Invited Ph.D. candidate applicants only (click here for information on applying to undertake a Ph.D. with TCC)
  • Required qualifications:
    • B.Sc. & Honours, B.Sc. & M.Sc., or overseas equivalent in a relevant field
    • Completion of a basic internship with TCC lasting at least 1 month
    • Sponsorship as a prospective Ph.D. candidate by a member of TCC’s research committee from Deakin University, the University of New South Wales or the University of Sydney
  • Other requirements:
    • Reasonable physical fitness, including the ability to lift 25 kg to chest height
    • Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle (4x4 experience preferred)
    • Clean driving record (no moving violations or accidents)
  • Duties: Assist TCC researchers by performing basic fieldwork procedures; receive comprehensive training in the handling of Tasmanian devils and spotted-tailed quolls; if continuing beyond 3 months, may be allowed to lead field expeditions independently
  • Animal handling: Yes, after sufficient training by TCC staff
  • Costs: TCC will subsidise the cost of transportation to and from north-western Tasmania, up to A$400 if supported by receipts for actual travel. Advanced interns also receive room and board at no cost.
